Woodburn’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Celebrates Volunteer Contributions
On Saturday, March 1, 2025, the Woodburn Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) celebrated the contributions of its 40 dedicated members, who collectively volunteered over 1,785 hours throughout the community in 2024.
Woodburn’s CERT program traces its roots back to the late 1990s when it was initially introduced by former Woodburn Fire member Tim Deitz. After a period of inactivity, the program was revived in 2013 by Uli Reich, who now leads the group and also serves as the Woodburn Fire District’s CPR Coordinator. Since its revival, the program has grown significantly, boasting over 40 active members today.
While the primary mission of CERT is to support first responders during large-scale incidents, its members consistently serve the community year-round. Their efforts include hosting bike safety events, assisting at the Woodburn Fire District’s open house, operating the first aid booth at Bauman Farms, installing smoke and CO detectors, and managing the Woodburn Fire District’s Air Unit, which provides air cylinder refills and firefighter rehabilitation on fire scenes.
The CERT program focuses on equipping citizens with essential lifesaving skills, ensuring they can assist families, neighbors, and businesses in times of need. Members receive training in disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations.
During the celebratory event, several members were recognized for their dedication, with special acknowledgment given to those who volunteered over 100 hours in 2024:
- Gervais Mayor Brian Wagner – 109.67 hours
- Mickey Wagner – 147.09 hours
- Mary Pardo – 156.33 hours
- Robert Mill – 163.44 hours
- Walt VanRheen – 218.70 hours
CERT Coordinator Uli Reich expressed his gratitude to the volunteers, stating, “We train for emergencies on how to take care of ourselves and those who need help around us. This selfless group does just that.”
